Attributes of the Five Animals: Crane.
Imagery:
From the sky above, the crane descends and lands upon the rocks. With dignity and poise, the crane looks across the lake. She unfurls her beautiful wings, and again takes flight. Each feather becomes part of a tapestry, woven to capture the current of the wind beneath her wings. The crane's wings continue to spread as she passes across the lake -- her reflection in the water fails to show the expanse of her movement. "Withdraw as soon as your work is done" -- Lao Tzu.
Essence:
Sinew. The crane displays breathtaking grace in all of her movement. Utilizing a full range of motion, the flexibility of the crane is displayed as she extends her wings and stands upon the rocks. The crane contracts, and then expands; folds, and then unfolds; draws, and then xpands; folds, and then unfolds; draws, and then extends.
Offensive/Defensive:
The crane is very reserved and seeks no aggression. However, if one attempts to attack her or her nest, the crane will utilize her full range of motion in defense.
Quality of Movement:
Balance. On one leg, two legs, or in flight, the crane is the embodiment of balance.
Quality of Character:
Benevolence. The crane is kind, caring, and nurturing. A noble animal, the crane has the confidence in herself to build up the esteem in others.
Combative Strategy:
In close, the crane will defeat the grappler with her beak, one legged stance, and folded wings. At a distance, the crane will protect her vital targets by unfurling her wings, utilizing the range of her legs, or even taking flight.
Stances/Postures:
The crane favors the one legged stance, the reverse bow, and the forward bow. These stances allow the crane to effectively utilize her full range of motion.
Empty Hand Weapons:
The bend in the wrist forms the crane's beak, the elbow forms the wing, and the knee strike forms the crane's one legged stance. The hammerfist strike results from the unfurling effect of the wing. Long range kicking techniques of all varieties are employed by the crane to control distance.
Weapons:
The staff is the weapon of the crane. Maximize the range of the staff by using it in a spearing fashion. In close combat, hold the staff in its middle and use both ends of the weapon -- similar to the use of the crane's wings.
